Printing

Printing from CSC Desktops/Laptops

The PaperCut Print Deploy Client is installed on all Desktops and laptops (see Accessories menu). You should log in and install the Maxwell_FindMe printer. You can now print to this printer from any application. To release the job, go to any Maxwell printer, log in with your University card, and select Release.

Please let a sysadmin know when toner needs replacing or if there are other problems with a printer.

In order to conserve paper and toner, both of which are expensive, you should print double-sided, and with two pages per side whenever possible. This should be an option when printing from any GUI program in Ubuntu. You should print in B/W as far as possible.

Web-Print

If you wish to print from your own laptop, or the DS-Print installed on a CSC laptop/desktop doesn't work, you can use DS Web-Print instead. After logging in, select "Web Print", and use the "Maxwell FindMe" print queue.

Printing problems

If your print-job takes a long time to spool (check using top or the printer icon on the GNOME taskbar), then it may be useful to do one of the following:

  1. Print only a few pages at a time
  2. Generate a Postscript file to print in the first place. Much of the processing time comes from translating PDF to Postscript.

Printing to special paper

If you need to print to a different kind of paper than standard A4/A3, then you will need to specify the use of "Manual Feed" or "Bypass Tray" in order to get the printer to use your paper (and prevent anyone else from accidentally printing to your expensive paper). Depending on the application being printed from, this may be under an "Advanced" tab on Printer properties, or via a "Device" tab, where the Bypass Tray can be enabled.

Poster printing

If you need to print anything larger than A3, you can use the University Printroom services. This will require payment, so please ask your supervisor or CSC administration for permission before using this approach.

Printing to the common Maxwell printers

If possible, you should use the UIS's DS-Print facility. See below for instructions. However, this is only available for users with a Raven account. Those who are visitors should follow the relevant instructions.

You can make use of Google Cloud Print to access DS-Print. Instructions are available for Windows/OS X/Linux at DS-Print on Google Print.

For those using DS-Print, free printer credit is available from Philip Blakely or Maxwell Administrators (admin@maxwell.cam.ac.uk).

Windows 7/8/8.1/10 (DS-Print)

You will need to install DS-Print from the UIS. Installation instructions are available from the UIS here.

You will need to select "Maxwell_FindMe" as your printer. This should print to any printer in the Maxwell building; just go to your nearest printer and log in with your University card and release your job.

Mac OS X (DS-Print)

You will need to install DS-Print from the UIS. Installation instructions are available from the UIS here.

If you have problems using the printer, download the correct driver for your OS from Konica. The printer model is "bizhub c368".

You will need to select "Maxwell_FindMe" as your printer. This should print to any printer in the Maxwell building; just go to your nearest printer and log in with your University card and release your job.

Ubuntu

There is no DS-Print option available for Ubuntu.

Please use the DS Web-Print instead. (Instructions at the top of the page.)
